CHAPTER 4 – LOVE?

Aurora was everywhere...

She sat with me at lunch. She waited for me after class. She laughed at the stupidest things and made me laugh too.

I didn’t even know I could laugh.

And when I did, she blinked at me, tilting her head.

"You don’t have to fake it, you know," she said, her voice soft. "I know I’m not funny."

She looked genuinely unsure, as if she wasn’t the brightest light in the whole world.

I wanted to tell her... You are. You’re the only thing keeping me sane.

But instead, I just shook my head...

"You’re funny."

She smiled...

And that was enough.

Aurora never had time for anything.

She told me about it one evening as we walked down a narrow road, kicking at small stones.

"My life is controlled," she admitted, sighing.

"Classes, meetings, schedules. I don’t even get to spend time with my own thoughts."

I listened, taking in every word, every detail.

All I wanted to do was take her away from all of it. Away from the expectations, the restrictions... away from the people who suffocated her.

Just her and me.

She belonged with me.

I introduced her to the stray cats I fed on my way to college.

They were scared of everyone but me. She knelt down, giggling as one of them cautiously approached her hand.

"I love them," she whispered.

I wanted to tell her I love you.

The first time someone tried to take her away from me, I laughed...

Sebastian...

He was tall, broad, rich... everything I wasn’t. And yet, he looked at me like I was the problem.

"Stay away from her," he muttered, his voice low.

I tilted my head, confused.

"I can see what you’re thinking," he continued.

"Aurora is kind to everyone, but don’t take it the wrong way. Stay in your limits."

My limits?

What gave him the right to set them?

Did he think I wasn’t good enough for her? That I had no right to be near her?

His words burned in my brain. Don’t admire her. Don’t love her.

But it was too late.

I already did....
